Paediatric anaesthesiology: Addressing age-specific pain management and anaesthetic administration in children

Author(s): Clara Müller, Luca Ferrara and Anna Schmidt

Abstract: Paediatric Anaesthesiology plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and comfort of children undergoing surgical procedures. Unlike adults, children exhibit unique physiological characteristics that significantly impact anaesthetic management. This review highlights the specific challenges involved in the anaesthetic care of Paediatric patients, focusing on age-specific pain management and anaesthetic administration. The Paediatric population, ranging from neonates to adolescents, requires careful consideration of developmental stages, body weight, and organ maturity, all of which influence drug metabolism, dosing, and the efficacy of anaesthetic agents. Additionally, children are more vulnerable to the psychological effects of surgery, necessitating tailored pain management strategies to address both acute and chronic pain. This paper aims to examine current practices in Paediatric Anaesthesia, with an emphasis on recent advances in pain management techniques, including multimodal analgesia and regional Anaesthesia. The increasing use of these strategies in Paediatric care is a response to the growing need for minimizing postoperative discomfort and enhancing recovery times. Furthermore, the review explores various anaesthetic agents and their dosing considerations, shedding light on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic variations in children. With a focus on evidence-based guidelines, this paper presents the latest research and clinical findings on optimizing anaesthetic care for children. It also aims to establish a framework for improving outcomes and minimizing adverse events related to Paediatric Anaesthesia. The goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current trends in Paediatric Anaesthesiology and encourage continued research to enhance the safety and efficacy of anaesthetic practices in this vulnerable patient group.
